David A. Clellan
was appointed ESA director on January 21, 2001. Born in Midland,
Texas, in 1946, Clellan attended Yale University, where he was a
classmate of President George W. Bush. After serving his country as
a decorated member of the Texas Air National Guard, Clellan received
an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he was also a classmate
of President George W. Bush. Returning to his native Texas, Clellan
took a job with Arbusto, later called Bush Exploration. In the early
1980s, when Bush Exploration merged with Spectrum 7, an
oil-investing fund, Clellan stayed on as director of research under
chairman George W. Bush. He was later one of a group of investors
gathered by President George W. Bush to purchase the Texas Rangers
baseball team and was a fixture at home games, where he was a
frequent guest of Mr. Bush. Moving to Austin in 1994, Mr. Clellan
served as an informal adviser to then-Gov. George W. Bush, who came
to rely on Mr. Clellan for his candid advice and free-spirited,
fun-loving nature.
Mr.
Clellan is married to the former Peggy Scuggs of Houston. The
Clellans have three sons: Ted, Bo, and George Jr.
