43. J. LLOYD and DOROTHY HUCK--$7.5 million to PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY to endow biotechnology research, to augment three previously established professorships, and to create three scholarship funds. Lloyd Huck is a retired chairman of Merck & Co.
43. RAYMOND D. NASHER--$7.5 million to DUKE UNIVERSITY (N.C.) to construct a new art museum on campus from the chairman of the Nasher Co. and of Comerica Bank-Texas.

JOHN and JULIE O'QUINN--a total of $7.5 million: $6 million to the UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON to expand Robertson Stadium and $1.5 million to Houston's CHILDREN'S ASSESSMENT CENTER, a facility where sexually abused children are treated and counseled. John O'Quinn is a trial lawyer who was part of the state of Texas' tobacco litigation team. He is a University of Houston alumnus and regent.

BILL DANIELS--a total of $7.25 million: $5 million to the NEW MEXICO MILITARY INSTITUTE to be used for scholarships and athletic programs (Daniels graduated from the NMMI high school in 1939 and from its junior college two years later). And $2.25 million to the UNIVERSITY OF DENVER, consisting of a $1.75 million house for the university to use as its chancellor's residence and $500,000 to renovate and furnish the house.
47. DONALD J. and LINDA J. CARTER--a total of $7 million to the TEXAS SCOTTISH RITE HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN to create the Christi Carter Urschel Family Resource Center, named for their daughter. Half of the gift came directly from the couple and the other half came through the Donald J. and Linda J. Carter Fund of the Communities Foundation of Texas. Donald Carter is chairman of Home Interiors and Gifts, which was founded by his late mother, Mary C. Crowley.
47. ELEANOR, IRVING, RICHARD, and ANN JAFFE--$7 million to the SAN DIEGO JEWISH ACADEMY to build a learning center. The Jaffes made their fortune with their San Diego-based company, Safeskin, which manufactures latex gloves in Malaysia and Thailand. The school, which is not affiliated with any formal movement of Judaism, emphasizes upholding family traditions.
47. PHYLLIS WATTIS--a total of $7 million: $5 million to the SAN FRANCISCO ART INSTITUTE for program support and $2 million to the SAN FRANCISCO MUSEUM OF MODERN ART.
50. JOHN B. and GERALDINE GODDARD--$6.5 million to WEBER STATE UNIVERSITY (Utah) to endow the College of Business and Economics. Mr. Goddard is founder of Western Mortgage Loan Corp. and United Savings Bank.
50. KENNETH G. LANGONE--$6.5 million to NEW YORK UNIVERSITY for its part-time, evening MBA program from this board member of the Home Depot and founder of the Manhattan investment company Invemed Associates. The gift will fund academic, professional, and personal advising for part-time students and establish the Langone Curriculum Innovation Fund to develop practical and creative teaching ideas and techniques.
50. JOHN P. McGOVERN--$6.5 million to DUKE UNIVERSITY to help construct a children's health center at the university's medical center. Dr. McGovern is a Houston allergist and immunologist.
