Project Manager, The Slate Group
Location: Washington, D.C., or New York City

Job Description
The Slate Group is looking for an experienced project manager to join its team. As one of the most influential and widely read news and culture magazines, Slate combines the innovation of a Web-only property with the quality and authority you'd expect from an organization owned by the Washington Post Co. Slate is the centerpiece of an expanding family of sites, including Double X, The Root, Slate V, The Big Money, and Foreign Policy.

The project manager will facilitate projects across The Slate Group. This will include running sprint meetings and coordinating across teams to make sure projects flow smoothly. The project manager will also ensure that projects are delivered efficiently, on time, and according to specification. A successful candidate will have an assertive personality, be able to track projects across groups, and be able to assess potential roadblocks accurately. The project manager will furthermore need to report on projects' statuses in a way that is visible to all project stakeholders. He or she will be responsible not just for reporting on projects but also for keeping things moving to meet The Slate Group's project-delivery schedule.

This role will serve mainly as project manager for larger projects across The Slate Group, but experience writing requirements, and the ability to jump in and help spec a new functionality, is important.

The project manager role at Slate will be a unique opportunity for an entrepreneurial project manager to shape the way The Slate Group develops and tracks new projects.

Responsibilities

Full-cycle agile project management to get The Slate Group projects deployed on time and to specification.
Coordinating with cross-functional teams, including development, design, editorial, business, and marketing to ensure they have visibility into the project pipeline.
Defining project scope, goals, and deliverables that support business goals in collaboration with senior management and stakeholders.
Planning and scheduling project timelines and milestones using appropriate tools.
Constantly monitoring and reporting on the progress of the project to all stakeholders

Requirements and Qualifications

Five or more years' business experience as a project manager at a fast-paced Internet business.
Experience working in an agile environment, running sprints and coordinating teams.
Ability to manage multiple projects at any given time.
Proven ability to work across functional teams to deliver projects to a schedule and specifications.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
B.A. required.

Double X Senior Software Engineer

Job Profile
The well-suited candidate will be comfortable working closely with the editors to design and develop an exciting new Slate Group Web site, Double X. This individual will be working directly with editorial staff to propose, define, design, and implement creative long-term solutions for recurring business needs; address daily production system issues; and provide leadership to the development team.

Strong troubleshooting, communication skills, and sense of humor are a must. This is an ideal position for a highly motivated senior Web developer with an affinity for journalism.

This position requires approximately 0 percent travel.

Currently this position is open in New York City.

Mandatory Skills and Experience

Ability to design and code medium- to large-size projects
Minimum five years of Web development experience, including design, development, and testing
Experience in Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and iterative methodologies
Understanding of layered architecture, MVC, and other design patterns
Experience with LAMP
Strong experience with object-oriented design and implementation
Thorough understanding of CMS system for public-facing media Web sites
Development experience with open-source CMS system(s). Experience with Drupal 6 required.
Experience in developing Web 2.0-powered Web sites
Must be able and willing to keep pace with advances in Web technologies
Must be proficient in at least one of the following programming languages: PHP, Python, Perl, Ruby. PHP 5.0 development experience is a major plus.

Experience with relational databases and stored procedures. MySQL and/or PostgreSQL preferred.
Experience with developing on Linux and/or Solaris systems

The Big Money Principal Software Engineer

The well-suited candidate will be comfortable working closely with the editors to develop, maintain, and enhance The Big Money's Web site. This individual will be working directly with editorial staff to propose, define, design, and implement creative long-term solutions for recurring business needs, address daily production system issues, and provide leadership to the development team.

Strong troubleshooting, communication skills, and sense of humor are a must. This is an ideal position for a highly motivated senior Web developer with an affinity for journalism.

Currently this position is open in either New York City or Washington, D.C.

The software engineer will help design and develop new Web applications, editorial features, and production tools for Slate.
